More About Vauxhall
The story about the origin of this area in south-west London is pretty interesting. Everything started in 1215 when the military leader Sir Falkes de Breaute, on behalf of King’s John, holds a successful military operation against the French Prince Louis. As a reward, he was given the hand of Margaret de Redvers, whose family owned a large domain in Lamberth.
Receiving a part of the land, de Breaute changed the name of the house to Falkes Hall. With time this name evolved into Fox Hall and eventually, in Vauxhall. In 1837 a huge amusing garden appeared on the territory of the present district. Situated near the Thames river, this green area quickly became a place for entertainment, combining dancing, trapeze acts and many other types of victuals. One of the regular visitors of the garden was the English theatre manager, Michael Maddox. Thanks to him, in 1837 the first train left from St. Petersburg to Vauxhall.
Today the only remains of the Pleasure Garden is a small park, surrounded by a huge roundabout and a bus station. There are a lot of modern houses all over the district, a variety of underground clubs and a lovely park with a lavender garden, where the local people like spending their free time.
